How to Pick a Dispensary in Pacoima (Without Getting Burned)

We're a dispensary on Van Nuys Blvd, so treat this the way you'd treat a restaurant recommending restaurants — with some suspicion. But the checklist below is the real one, and it works whether or not you end up at our counter. Most of it is stuff you can verify in about ninety seconds on your phone, standing on the sidewalk.

1. Check the license before anything else

This is the only item on the list that isn't a matter of taste. California requires every cannabis retailer to hold a state license, display it, and put the number on its advertising. Ours is C10-0000845-LIC.

You can look up any shop's license yourself at the Department of Cannabis Control's public search. Type the name, see the status. If a store's license doesn't come up as active, or the number on the door doesn't match what's in the database, leave. It isn't a technicality: unlicensed shops sell untested product, and untested product is where the pesticide and heavy-metal stories come from.

Unlicensed stores are also usually the ones with prices that look too good. There's a reason for that, and the reason is that nobody paid for testing or taxes.

2. Ask whether everything is lab-tested — and how they answer

Under California law (MAUCRSA), every product sold in a licensed shop has to be tested by an independent, state-licensed laboratory before it hits the shelf. That covers potency, but more importantly it covers pesticides, residual solvents, heavy metals and microbials.

A good shop answers this instantly and can show you a certificate of analysis. A bad one gets cagey or waves at a sticker. The right follow-up question is "can I see the COA for this jar?" — the answer tells you everything about how the place is run.

3. Look at how they talk about price

Cannabis pricing in Los Angeles is genuinely confusing, mostly because of the tax stack. Here's the part shops don't always volunteer: in California, discounts come off before taxes are calculated. So a percentage-off deal saves you slightly more than the sticker math suggests.

The tell of an honest shop is that they explain that unprompted, and that their deals don't require decoding. If you need a decoder ring to figure out what something costs — stacking rules, excluded brands, mystery tiers — that's a choice the store made, and it wasn't made for you.

4. Judge the staff by whether they'll say "I don't know"

The single best signal in a dispensary is a budtender who is comfortable saying "I haven't tried that one — but this one I have, and here's what it did."

Confidence is easy to fake and useless. What you want is someone who asks what you're actually after — sleep, focus, pain, a Saturday afternoon — and translates that into a product, instead of pointing at the highest THC number in the case. THC percentage is a famously bad predictor of how something will feel; terpenes do more of that work. A shop whose whole pitch is big numbers is a shop that hasn't thought very hard.

5. Match the hours to your actual life

This one's mundane and it matters more than people expect. A dispensary you can't get to is not a good dispensary, however nice the shelf is.

Pacoima and the neighborhoods around it — Arleta, Sun Valley, Sylmar, San Fernando — run on early shifts. Most Valley shops open at 8, 9 or 10, which is useless if you're already at work by then. We open at 7 AM and close at 10 PM, every day, specifically because of that.

6. Cash, cards, and not being surprised at the register

Federal banking rules make card acceptance genuinely difficult for cannabis retailers, so policies vary a lot and change without warning. Check before you drive over.

We're cash only, with an ATM inside. Not glamorous, but it's stated up front, which is the part that counts. The bad version of this is finding out at the counter with a full basket.

Licensed and verifiable. Everything lab-tested, with the paperwork available. Pricing that explains itself. Staff who'd rather be useful than impressive. Hours that fit your day. Payment terms you knew about in advance.
